Victoria – List of Free Camping Sites
Sawpit Free Campground
This campsite is situated in Mount Clay State Forest not too far from Portland. This free campground provides plenty of opportunities for recreation activities including obviously camping.
Pettmans Beach
This campground which has approximately 10 sites for your use is located within Lake Tyers State Park. This park consists of tall eucalyptus trees and follows the northern shores of the Lake Tyers stretch to Mount Nowa. There is a thin sand spit which divides the ocean from the lake.
MacKillops Bridge Campground
This location offers a great spot for some free camping near the border of NSW and has simple access from the north side of MacKillop’s Bridge. This is a super spot to camp if you are an avid fan of rafting trips down the river on a canoe. It also has a great opportunity for fishing for the anglers out there.
Carter’s Beach
Carters Beach camping is a great spot for the family where you can enjoy swimming at the famous Murray River. It is also an amazing spot for wildlife where you will see both Koalas and Kangaroos roaming the surrounding areas. There is also plentiful of native birds to wake you up in the morning.
Beauchamp Falls Reserve
The campground is just 40 minutes from the stunning Beauchamp Falls. It makes for a great day out with a base camp to return to at the end of the hike. The falls are located within The Great Otway National Park. A forest which is littered with thick ferns, blackwood and myrtle beech trees.
Reeves Beach Free Campsite
Reeves Beach camp site is located on the 90 mile beach in the East Gippsland region. One of the big ups of this camp site is how close it is located to the beach. Another amazing location in such close proximity to the beach and of course yes this campsite is free once again.
Blue Pool Campground
This camping location is also a great spot for the avid hiker as there are many short and longer walks which are accessible from the campsite. For the ultra enthusiasts, this includes Track 96 which is a whopping 60 km’s. Plan to do this one over a multiple-day stint.
Woods Point Picnic and Camping Ground
The campground itself is located right on the banks of the water’s edge of the river. You are also nestled among the native forest and there is a lovely picnic area located in the state forest.
New South Wales – List of Free Camping Sites
Ellenborough Reserve Campground
A very popular free camping NSW site, just a stone’s throw inland from Port Macquarie. Due to its location can get super busy during holiday periods.
Ngarigo Campground
A super picturesque spot in the alpine region on the banks of the Thredbo River. What does this mean? Well with such a high elevation it can get super cold, in fact during winter months its common to get snow.
Mann River Free Camping
It is located just east of Glen Innes, not too far from the Great Dividing Range. Judging by the review profile it seems an amazing spot for the perfect camping bush holiday or just a stop on your road trip around Australia.
Bendella Recreation Area
Bendella is a very popular camp area which is not too far from Sydney, just 150 km’s south of Sydney. It is a very big camping ground and area and makes the perfect spot for large groups of people.
Tooloom Falls Free Camp Grounds
Tooloom Falls is quite the magical spot and a super-easy campground to find when using Google maps. If travelling from up north the drive from the Gold Coast area along the Mount Lindsay Highway is quite spectacular as well.
Meroo Head Free Camp Grounds
Truth be told I was struggling to find a free camp site which was near the beach in NSW. Well after some time here I have found which looks to be an amazing spot on the south coast of the NSW, just 240kms out of Sydney.
Brou Lake campground
Brou Lake campground as the name suggests is nestled between Lake Brou and the ocean, specifically Jemisons Beach. It is located in Bodalla which ins on the far south coast of NSW. In a forest location there are plenty of outdoor activities to get on, obviously hiking and checking out the area is one of those.
Queensland – List of Free Camping Sites
Notch Point Free Campground
The first free camping spot is a beach location which is on the northside of QLD, between Mackay and Rockhampton. It is a perfect location to just sit down relax and enjoy the environment. For those of you unaware of how big QLD is, this spot is located 10 hours north of Brisbane. It’s not a day trip from town.
Babinda Rotary Park Free Campground
The Babinda Rotary Park Rest area is in the North Queensland region and in the grand scheme of free camping facilities, this provides pretty much all that’s needed. It even has a shower block which will provide you with hot water showers for a lazy $2 if you’re in need of a real shower with hot water.
Lake Elphinstone Free Campsite
Lake Elphinstone is a super popular spot in the Nebo Shire. It is a large natural lake which makes it a very popular spot for water sports. Bear in mind this is always dependent on the water height at the time, so if planning on doing so please contact the local council for a report.
Julia Creek Free Campsite
The area has continued to offer their free camping site in this rural community and is a great example of what can be achieved when providing such a spot for travelling campers and the value they bring to the town.
Toomulla Beach Free Campsite
Toomulla Beach Rest Area, Toomulla, is a large shady, creek front rest area close to town and the beach. It has basic facilities including toilets, non-potable water, bins, BBQ’s, boat ramp and a playground. It is suitable for Caravans, Trailers, Vans and Tent based camping. Perfect for large and small groups.
Vincent ‘Bushy’ Parker Park Campsite
A great little spot that can be accessed by all kinds of vehicles. It can be commonly known as Rollingstone Campsite due to its proximity to the township of Rollingstone.
Kauri Creek Free Campgrounds
So if you’re in the need for some space, here it is Kauri Creek at Lake Tinaroo. There is so much space and it has plentiful of activities to do in the area. It’s a great spot to set up and explore the surrounding areas.
Tasmania – List of Free Camping Sites
Cosy Corner South Free Campsite
All I can say is from the research I have done on this location, it is absolutely spectacular. Just looking at the pictures it seems quite magical. What a way to start out list of Free Camping Tasmania.
Friendly Beaches camping area
This location is all about nature and the wow factor. Friendly Beaches campground is an amazing spot in the Frecyinet National Park, this is on the east of Tasmania. With that all being said with all its beauty this location does come with the downside of not having any facilities at all. Well, there is a toilet, but that’s it!
Mayfield Bay Conservation – Camping Area
The Mayfield Bay Conservation Area is located halfway up the east coast of Tasmania, not too far from Swansea. This small preserve runs from Frecyinet Peninsula across from Great Oyster Bay’s west side. It is a free camping site which is nestled just behind the beautiful sandy beach.
Dora Point Camping Area
Camping at Dora Point just seems to be another spectacular spot. These free campsites in Tasmania seem to be serving up the goods for beach camping. It is located in the Bay of Fires in Binalong Bay, St Helens. You can camp at this location for up to four weeks and you can also bring your furry friends along (on leash).
Bethune Park Camping Area
The Bethune Park Camping Area is located just outside of Ouse, just over the river in the Central Highlands of Tasmania. Another free camping area in Tasmania that is right near the banks of Lake Meadowbank. It has some spectacular views of the lake and the surrounds.
Marrawah Green Point Campground
This is rated one of the best free camping sites in Tasmania. The camping area at Green Point in Marrawah while small offers a spectacular stay, with amazing coastal views and a glorious beach to match. With the size of the campground and its popularity it can get very busy in holiday periods, so be prepared if you do not happen to score a spot at this campground.
Waterhouse Point Camping Area
The Waterhouse Conservation Area free campsite is located about 40 km’s to the east of Bridport and can be accessed from the B82 via Homestead and Lagoon Roads. The area is quite large and spans 25 km’s of the coastline.
Western Australia – List of Free Camping Sites
Stockton Lake Recreation Area
Stockton Lake free camping area is a very unique spot. The lake itself was originally an open-cut mine. It is now obviously filled with water to make a much loved artificial lake. There are many open areas amongst the trees where you can set up your tent which will allow some shade for those hot summer days.
Bettys Beach Free Campgrounds
If you are in the Albany area and south-west coast of WA one of the places you have to stop by for a free camp is Betty’s Beach. It’s hard to believe such an amazing location on the coast is free and judging by its 4.9 Google rating it must be a knockout and just 50 km’s east of Albany.
Byron Bay – List of Free Camping Sites
Hilltop Lookout
This rest area is typically only used for day use but reports around the interwebs suggest that it is rare that you will bump into a ranger at this location. The reality is if you do happen to bump into a ranger in this location, just tell them that you need to rest due to fatigue. You will continue your journey north or south when you’re in a position to do so. Ain’t nobody going to force a tired driver back on the road my friends.
Yelgun Rest Area
Again being a free camping area in the Byron region, it does happen to be 25 km’s away from the town centres. In saying that for a rest area it actually is pretty sweet! You can stay in your campervan at no cost in this location. You obviously can’t whip out your tent, but for the self-sufficient camper, it will make do.
Sunnycrest Lane Rest Area
Th Sunnycrest Lane Rest Area is located on the B62 just on the Sunnycrest Lane. There is a nice clear sign in the area which clearly states, no overnight camping allowed. It seems from the word online is that people have rarely had problems in this location, alas the rest excuse is always in your back pocket. Some have even noted that they have spent many nights there.
Tyagarah Rest Area
The sign clearly states no camping. As I have mentioned previously you can always use the old line of that you are too tired to continue driving. As this location is on the main Pacific Highway I would suggest it would be one of the more prominent locations for rangers to visit. Alas, you can always try your luck.
Great Ocean Road – List of Free Camping Sites
Allenvale Mill – bush campground Lorne
This is a lovely totally free camping site, near Lorne on the Ocean Road It is unusual because the camping sites are just easily accessible by strolling the 200 metres or two along a well-surfaced track.
Big Hill Track Camping
Big Hill campground, Great Otway National Park outdoor camping Lorne Victoria seasonal camping site, match college teams large, level open location bordered by tall woodland and also prominent with institution teams.
Sharps Track Camping Area

Roses Park Rest Area
Located 14Km west of Bellingen or 14km eastern of Dorrigo on Waterfall Way, Roses Park Rest Area is a free/pay by contribution short-term camping site. The rest location is right next to the Bellinger River and is preserved by neighborhood volunteers so please make sure you leave a contribution in box given. This is just 30km’s from Coffs Harbour.
Little Murray River – Dorigo
When it’s time to head for capitals, why not head to the plateau nation of Barrington Tops National Park? Just 70kms from Coffs Harbour, this remote camping area supplies an one-of-a-kind wilderness escape accessed via 4WD. Although just three hours from Newcastle, you’ll be waking here to a dawn chorus of birdsong.
